Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree

Yes, I know its only just December but the whole Christmas tree thing pre occupies me from about now.

I know some people put their tree up at the beginning of December but I am usually quite late on and the weekend prior to Christmas Day is my normal time for tree/decorations being pulled out of their dusty hiding places and arranged artfully (I like to think!) around the house. I am not big on decorations though so tend to hold back a bit as I know its just more work for me to keep them dust free and then the hassle of putting it all away again a few weeks later to contend with! Bah Humbug did I hear you say :-D

I never seem to get the whole tree thing right though. I have had fake trees, real trees, fibre optic trees, cable light trees, twigs with lights etc etc but never am completely happy with whatever offering I come up with!

What do you like? I know some people swear by a real tree and nothing else and I must admit there is something special about the smell and look of a real tree. I always pick the "no needle loss guaranteed" ones but have found out to my cost that THEY LIE!
I can spend hours and hours putting my tree together and go to bed happy but the next morning it looks like something has attacked it in the night and it is surrounded by a bed of pine needles which then impale themselves in my feet on a regular basis from that moment on until the time I find super human strength to pick it up and throw it out when I have just about had enough of vacuuming EVERY SINGLE DAY.

So then I hunt out fake tree's but mine never look like they do on display in the shops and always seem to have at least half of the branches missing making it look as barren as the real tree does a few days after it drops all of its needles.

So to tree or not to tree that is the question.............

There is something really magical about a Christmas tree though and the children will have "their" tree which they can decorate themselves with all those delightful hand made offerings they come home with over the years. Little do they know that Mummy takes it all off when they have gone to bed and re-does it ......

Ha! This struck a note. I rearrange the tree and its decorations when I'm on my own, too! Control freaks...

I prefer real trees but the husband is an environmental scientist so chopping down trees isn't going to please him. We have a tiny artifical tree, not sure if we'll put it up this year and if we do it shan't be until after my birthday, three days before christmas.

OOohh looking forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Oh no, when somebody decorates my tree, it doesn't save it! That's no good, is it!!!! I think I might take it down. Grrr.
I love real trees, bushy and lovely and woody smelling.
She's all packed, but I haven't been able to get to the post office. But I wanted you to know she's by the front door and ready to head in your direction! x

Hi Lesley,

I work for a company that makes fake trees. The secret to making them look nice and full is lots and lots of 'fluffing'! Spend ages bending and spreading out the branches, stand back and check for gaps before you start decorating it and you should find it looks nice and full.

Personally, I recommend a prelit tree because I can never spread the light out properly if I put them on myself!

I'm a bit of a christmas freak, and like to go to town on my tree which is a fake one, due to my animals paws and pine needles. However, this year I intend to treat myself to a small potted real tree for the sideboard in the lounge, that can go in the garden after xmas. xxx

I'm so giddy about Christmas trees my tree is up already (and my cats are attacking it too!) I have a fake one that we got from Tesco last year and it's pretty good, no gaps etc. I do spend a bit of time sorting out all the braches before I start to decorate it though.

now we always have a real one, I find the ones with short stumpy needles drop less (I won't say they don't drop......)
but one year we had a really lovely branch we found when we went for a walk, and we decorated that, and it felt really nice, a bit different, but still festive.

Ooh, I do love a real tree, but we've had a fake one for ages now (ever since the children were young!). We put ours up on Monday - much earlier than usual .. in fact, we've gone a bit mad and put the ooutdoor lights up as well! I think the whole 'credit crunch' vibe has made people want to cheer themselves up and put up the decs early?!!

Oooohhh always a real tree.... I buy a potted one so I can put it in the garden after. When I moved house my dad was shocked that I had 6 trees!!! They died after the move :( but this is my
3rd year here so I have 2 in garden. This year I'm not getting one.... soooo much fuss for 1 day!! I'm never here at this time of year & as I don't have children I don't see the point. I've asked the cats & they said they didn't mind not having one!!!! :)

Hello

Real Tree then recycle it. I agree about decorations. I like to decorate but not too much - TOO much hassle putting it all away! Plus this year I fear it may all be wrecked by the kittens. Have survived three kids and all the decorations only to be hassled by two kittens now! No glass baubles this year imagine how many times the tree is going to keel over!!!

I usually go for the real thing, but not this year! I cannot be bothered with the mess, even the non drop ones drop in my house!
The real ones without doubt look and smell better though.
Your last paragraph made me laugh...that is just what I used to do...lol

I like real trees but am never happy with how I've decorated it. Like you I don't like too many decorations and become irritated with them after a while. A day or two before Christmas I cut loads of ivy from the garden and bring it inside. The outcome is never very professional looking but I'm not keen on fake stuff.

We have a little fibre optic tree which changes colour - it looks lovely in the dark and the kids are mesmerised by it. We also have a really cheap (tesco value!) artificial tree which looks surprisingly 'charming' once it's decorated! I tend to wait till the weekend before Christmas before putting it up but Mr Earplugs has gone all Christmassy on me so I guess it will be going up sooner rather than later.

We have had both, had a fake one for the years when the lids were crawling/little, then last year our first Christmas at no 24 we had a big real one in our bay window, put up mid Dec. It was beautiful :: bushy and green and very christmassy. Will prob do same this year, we are thinking of going to cut our own as we've never done this before.

I put LOADS of decs on ; lights, bead strings, baubles, bells, pinecoanes, cinnamon sticks and various other decs, i love it full to bursting. Takes us all day to decorate. LOL, only a few weeks to go!

PS With real trees, you get what you pay for. ours cost £34 last yr (it was 6.5ft) and although expensive, it looked great and needle drop was almost non existent.

We have had the same artificial tree for the past 9 years, we bought it at a diy store in the sale. I spend a considerable time fluffing it and then I decorate it with the lights, Jamie and this year Daniel will both help with the baubles.

i think I might go for some orange and cinnamon sticks this year... I can't risk having a real one as the dog would probably think its a doggy convenience and short out the lights!

I am fussy about the decorations but I try to chill and let the little ones join in...

Growing up in South Africa, we never had a real Christmas tree (it's ummer there now and waaay too hot). So now that I'm in the UK, Ilove having a real tree, elthough Inever realised just how many needles they loose! But I'm aiming for a real one this year again, not too big, but with lots of simple red and white decorations and no tinsel, I'm not a fan.
